Our Top Tips to Make Your Rental Property Feel Like Home

07 November 2022

When renting a property, there’s always the question of what you can and can’t do to make it feel like a home.

There are, of course, loads of things you can do to put your stamp on a rental property to make it more personal to you but don’t go ripping out the kitchen sink just yet!

The golden rule is to always check your tenancy agreement before making any major renovation. Most of the time you’ll find clear guidelines of what you can do to the property whilst you’re there and, where there aren’t, just speak to your landlord or management agent.

The extent of just how much you can put your stamp on a property will vary depending on your landlord but, generally, you will be allowed to carry out simple cosmetic changes to a property.

Whilst you may not be able to carry out a fancy kitchen makeover without consent, you can certainly make some small tweaks to change the colour palette.

Why not think about freshening up your kitchen with new matching appliances? We love this vintage set from Ariete! Or, for the more modern appliance lover, what about this Nordic toaster with a matching kettle?

Curtains, rails, or blinds are also another great way to freshen up your home. Soft furnishings are the easiest way to make your home yours. Matching cushions, blankets, and even bedsheets can change the entire aura of a room.

Finally, think about smell! Smell can be one of the most powerful things in your home. Candles are the most obvious choice, with stores like TK Maxx hosting an array of pumpkin spice or cinnamon scents for the colder months, but have you thought of wax melts? Wax melts provide the same custom aroma, but don’t put your home at risk with an open flame! Why not check out the Yankee Candle melts here?

Remember, always bear your security deposit in mind and try to stay away from any work that you won’t be able to put back to its original state before you leave, to avoid any disputes down the line. It’s a good idea to obtain written consent before you embark on any project.

Here at Wards, we pride ourselves on matching great landlords with great tenants for long-lasting tenancies and, if you follow these tips, you can truly make your rental feel like home.
